I was completely carried away by the beauty of Hannah Kent's second novel. Based like "Burial Rites" on true events, we are now in rural Ireland before the Famine where people's lives and their beliefs seem so very far removed from what we know today. The beginning of the novel and the stage is set. A ploughman, "eyes red-rimmed in their sockets" and a blacksmith, "his forearms star-speckled from ironwork" carry the body of Martin Leahy back to his wife Nora. He has just collapsed at a crossroads "hand on his chest like a man taking an oath". What happens next concerns their four-year-old grandson who suffers from some sort of neurological disease, cannot speak or walk and whose body is covered with bed sores. Nora comes to believe that the unfortunate child is not their own but a changeling left by the fairies or Good People when they "swept away" the real child. She is spurred along in her beliefs by Nance Roche who cures with plants and has the "knowledge". Young Mary Clifford, (for me the most moving character in the novel) is hired at a fair to look after the stricken child. This is a harsh tale, certainly not an easy read but what a rewarding one !Hannah Kent's use of language is absolutely masterful. What poetry in its descriptions ! Nance in a forest setting: ""the morning rain left the moss vivid underfoot, and the leaves cast their dappled shadow on the clay and stone and leaf. Birds rustled the berried briar. The sight of the forest floor carpeted with the beetled backs of acorns had rushed her with happiness." As for the Romantic Poets, pleasure and the other side of the same coin, terror. "She choked with fear till piss ran down her leg."Her analysis of the psychology of her characters is both subtle and deep. When Mary Clifford thinks "There was no telling the shape of a heart from the face of the one who carried it" we think Shakespeare, Macbeth Act I scene 4 "There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face."

Livre acheté neuf arrivé abîmé dû à une erreur de manutention lors de l'emballage. Le livre avait glissé de l'emballage, l'un des côtés n'ayant pas été fermé, ce qui m'a extrêmement contrarié vu qu'il s'agissait d'un cadeau. UN LlVRE ACHETÉ NEUF DOIT ARRIVER DANS UN ÉTAT IMPECCABLE.

The Good People. What an amazing work of art! Once I was immersed in this dark and magical place, I could not put this book down. This is not a tale for everyone, for the faint of heart. The tale clearly sprung, as shared by the author, from a newspaper article and from the books and Irish folk legends and was exceedingly researched ... but, only Ms. Kent has a way of bringing characters to life as she did near Killarney in 1825. I walked beside them, fearful. The language she used, at times difficult, was as a clever time machine carrying us to a new land. At times, I wanted to hug Nora or Nance; at times, I wanted to slap them. Oh, the emotions! My heart went out to Mary. Mary: “There was no telling the shape of a heart from the face of the one who carried it.” This tale … filled with lessons learned, lessons not learned. The conflict between the church and the cures. Thank you, Ms. Kent, for a true journey to such a dark valley in dark times where I had wont of a bath and respite from aching bones. Of course, I cannot wait or her next novel!

Someone suggested I should read Hannah Kent's first book 'Burial Rites' before reading this book for our book group- so I did.I found the detail of the living arrangements in both books virtually identical- and the plots weren't much different either. The first book held my interest for longer- probably because it was set in a completely unfamiliar place (early 19th century Iceland) but by the time I got to this book (set in the same period but in rural Ireland) the novelty had worn off rather. Essentially I found both books rather tedious, but 'the Good People' being the second one I read more so because of its similarity to the first. I wont be rushing out to get Ms Kent's 3rd book! That said, both books are well written and provide what I understand to be something of an accurate insight into the lives of the characters they depict. Some will enjoy this book and its predecessor- but I did not.

Hannah Kent has only written two books so far & I hope there are more in the works. Like her first novel, Burial Rites, The Good People is ripped from the pages of cold history. The lives & character of these illiterate 18th century Irish peasants is vividly portrayed. We take a lot for granted in our culture, so it left me with a sense of intense gratitude & compassion. How these people survived Irish winters without shoes & only a shawl for warmth amazed me. And it never ceases to astonish me how ignorant people can turn on their own just because the weather is bad. Vivid and heartbreaking.

As with Hannah Kent's first book, Burial Rites, she has based this one on a real occurence, this time in early 19th century Ireland. There are similarities in the works in that the society is primitive, surviving hand to mouth from one potato harvest to the next, supplementing their income by selling eggs from their chickens and milk and butter from their cow. Life is hard and conditions bleak, especially in winter when their huts and fires provide little shelter and heat. Belief in myths and superstition is strong and the villagers are careful not to annoy the 'Good People' or little people who they believe are out do make mischief but can also bestow medical cures and wealth.When Nora's husband collapses and dies not long after the death of their only daughter, Johanna, she finds herself alone having to care after Johanna's severely disabled son Micheál. Nora hires a girl, Mary, to help take care of him but becomes convinced the Good People can help restore the previously healthy little boy to her. She seeks out the help of Nance Roche, the village herbal healer and midwife who believes she can communicate with the Good People and together they plan a cure for Micheál.This is a dark and bleak story but a compelling one as the villagers turn against Nance and Nora and events proceed to their unhappy climax. As previously, Hannah Kent's research into the life and times of early 19th century Irish peasants is very thorough and she paints a picture of a deeply superstitious people with the Church waging war on their primitive beliefs.

Riveting read..but depressing! What a great writer Hannah Kent is. I could not put this book down , I HAD to find out what happened to that poor child! I know the stories of the very poor, and the very illiterate eking out a living in far flung valleys in Ireland in the 1800's . I also know of the religious and superstitious beliefs that ruled their daily lives, I found it a fascinating an interesting read but also a book that dragged me down. I give the writing five stars, but four stars for making me depressed.I am an avid,life long reader and like reading intelligent books on many subjects. Yes! many,many books have made me cry, but this book's characters made me feel quite sad, angry ,depressed , and wanting to shake some them. I grew tired of their constant spitting and crossing them selves at every opportunity . I downloaded an excellent "Happy" novel ( " The year of Living Danishly" ) to start reading ten minutes after finishing this book, as I figured I was too old to re read Mary Poppins !Please Hannah Kent, keep writing, you are a brilliant , descriptive writer , and I loved your first book, and I look forward to your next story.
